This Thing Changed My Life… Not to Be Dramatic πŸ˜‚

Hey Reader!

How is your week going so far? I can't believe it's already Wednesday, right?!

Monday was Scout's birthday, and so now he's a big 7 years old. I'm super into my mama feelings right now about that. My last baby...my last hurrah. I still see his chubby cheeks, and his little piggies, and his tiny little fingers...but I know good and well that in a blink of an eye, his cheeks will get sculpted, his piggies will stink and be hairy, and his fingers will lose that soft look to them.

Here we are:

Eating on his bday (yes, I just cut my hair super short this past Saturday!)

Pic with the bday boy (the next day)

Every time I think about my kids getting older, I not only get sad but I also get anxiety – I see all the things I need to do more of before they get grown and gone! There's just not enough time in the day – or energy in one floppy mama – to prepare kids for adulthood.

I start feeling that mom guilt creep in about things I need to do better and all the things I purposefully skipped or accidentally didn't do in hindsight.

It really makes you preserve each moment as if it's your own personal video camera you hit record on, to replay later in life. You tend to hug them a bit tighter and longer, and inhale their special scent more intentionally in order to commit it to memory. Commit the feel of them in your arms and the sight of them before you to memory.

Every birthday rags me out! What about you? You get it all hyped up in your head to make sure it's a good birthday for your kiddo, that the mental chaos plus the actual day of go-go-go wears you down. I'm always a zombie by 6pm on a birthday. It's usually the best sleep I get, too. 😏

I love it all.

Even though it's The Way of the Mama to lovingly raise your kiddo with a side of sadness as time marches on, this maternal ambivalence never takes away the pride I feel for how my kids are shaping up to be.

Isn't it a wonder that God created each individual person different from the next? And He knew you needed this child or children in your life to fulfill part of your purpose on this earth? It could have been any child, but He chose *this* child, with *this* child's personality and spirit, to be in your care.

Anyway, I think it's cool.

On another note, if you're a Demon Slayer fan, the first of the trilogy of movies, the final battle in the Infinity Castle, is set for July 18th! If you're unfamiliar, I highly recommend you watch it on Netflix. It has so much passion. That ROAR feeling during a battle.

About Demon Slayer:

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese anime and manga series that follows a young boy, Tanjiro Kamado, who becomes a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered by demons, with only his younger sister, Nezuko, survivingβ€”but she’s turned into a demon herself. Determined to find a cure for her and avenge his family, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps, facing powerful enemies and growing stronger along the way.

***While Demon Slayer is beautifully animated and has themes of STRONG perseverance, family, and morality, it does contain intense action, violence, and dark supernatural elements. It’s best suited for older kids and teens, especially those who enjoy adventure stories with deep emotional moments.***

Tanjiro is the kindest person you'll have see! Ever!

Definitely give it a chance. (Remember, you heard it here first! 🀣)

It was the first anime I even got glued to way back when. I liked it, even though I was just kind of watching it as my daughter was watching it.

But I remembered how much I liked it years later when I decided to give it a go after my daughter repeatedly asked me to watch it with her.

So I figured, if anything, it's a good bonding time with her.

Little did I know that my life would be changed forever. Not to be dramatic or anything.

But as I was cleaning the house today, rearranging my bedroom, actually, I kept hearing the theme music in my head. πŸ˜‚ And I just finished watching the 5-season series for a second time. And it doesn't even end at the end of season 5... they're wrapping up the story with a movie trilogy. And the first to be released July 18th.

So we won't get to see the ending for probably a couple more years, which stinks, if you ask me.

Which is why I just got the manga box set (the anime book series) as a special treat "for the kids" (and also for our read alouds)!

While my daughter, Zoey (13yo) is starting to read the book from where season 5 finished on Netflix (which I guess is like in the middle of the 23-book series), I called dibs on Book 1. πŸ™ŒπŸ»

But since Daniel, my 14-year-old son and the oldest, wanted to read it too, I decided to play nice blah blah and read it aloud for homeschool. πŸ˜‚

Why not make it a school thing and have them write an essay about it? We've been studying creative writing and figurative language, so I think it's perfect!

Daniel hasn't even watched it yet. He's currently at the end of Season 1 because I wouldn't stop jabbering about it when I finished watching the show again. In fact, last night before bed, he just came to my bedroom to give me an update and express his emotions about the recent episode. πŸ˜†

I absolutely LOVE being interested in the same things my kids are interested in. And I can tell they absolutely love it, too. It makes us closer, for sure.

When before I wouldn't even get the imaginary money with my hard-earned money on V-Bucks for Fortnite or Robux for Roblox, now that I play both, I get it.

It's a JOY thing.

But I love these kinds of things with my kids. We can talk about things they're passionate about and interested in. I'll be honest, I wouldn't probably have picked up any of these interests without kids. But I think it's super important to just go along with their interests, even if it's not like a wow factor for you just yet, but do genuinely give it a solid go. You might surprise yourself.

I'm actually watching Demon Slayer for a third time, immediatley upon finishing my 2nd time through, I went back to Season 1 Episode 1 to begin it again – I'm not ready to say goodbye!! You ever do that?

Kind of like the only books I've ever read more than once are:

  1. Divergent by Veronica Roth, and...
  2. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

While I'm not really a Twilight fan anymore, I also read it [almost] twice...I just didn't read the last book. Guess I was tired of it by that point.

The writing of Divergent and The Hunger Games, though, is stellar. I just love the writing. Especially Divergent. There's a scene at the end where the main character, Tris, asks her mom, "Did I do good?" after all her struggles. 😒

As you can see, I love passionate books and movies. Stories that make you want to jump up and roar like a mama tigress [dictionary definition: a fierce or passionate woman]. The kind of storytelling that grips you heart and grabs you by the soul, shakes you around, and leaves you emotionally wrecked but somehow begging for more. You really pull for the protagonist, and it feels like you're there with them.

Where the protagonist doesn't just go through the hardships toward the climax, but REALLY goes through some incredible, unfathomable levels of suffering! And the plot has to twist and the story has to weave. It's gotta be THAT good for me to watch something more than once or read something more than twice.

And as I mentioned, the book Divergent really did that for me. The story writing of The Hunger Games was also really good, too, but my #1 is Divergent – like, ever.

Which sucks that they aren't going to make the last movie in the series!! Like, who does that?!! UGH.

Speaking of writing, here's a Noah's Ark writing pack for young kids!

unit study planner

"Creating a unit study feels so overwhelming. Where do I even start?" "I've tried unit studies before, but they always end up scattered and incomplete." I thought so too but turns out – nope! This year, my kids are loving learning! We just finished a unit study on the American Revolution that I made myself, and they're practically experts. It was so organized and engaging, and I actually enjoyed the process, too! Wondering how? I established a unit study planning system that: Is easy to...
